Cape Fear Valley Health System Best Practices
In 2001, HR Solutions administered Cape Fear Valley Health System’s first ever full-census employee survey. The results did not seem too encouraging for what is now North Carolina’s ninth largest health system; the survey finished with only 51 percent participation, and Cape Fear Valley’s scores were in the 35th percentile compared to the National Norm, meaning they scored at the same or better than only 35 percent of other healthcare organizations. The overall outcome, however, ended up creating significant benefits for the health system.
Certain best practices used alongside survey results took employee participation up to 99.8 percent by Cape Fear’s third survey, which also provided scores that moved the health system up to the 8th percentile of all organizations in the Normative Database. Throughout the years, Cape Fear’s overall job satisfaction levels have steadily increased as a result of continuous surveys and consistent efforts. Furthermore, employees’ confidence in administration’s use of survey results for continuous improvement has soared. In 2005, Cape Fear was named among Solucient’s “100 Top Hospitals®: Performance Improvement Leaders? for their consistent improvements in patient care, financial performance, and operation efficiency. Two years later, HealthGrades® rated Cape Fear Valley in the top five percent for both clinical excellence and patient safety.
